Day 1 Okonjima Nature Reserve

It's time to get your Namibian safari underway. There are just a few formalities before you get started, and we'll have you out on the road and exploring in no time. The wildlife and landscapes that lie just over the horizon mean you have so much to look forward to and it all starts here.

Combine conservation with a wildlife safari at Okonjima Nature Reserve, a private sanctuary run by AfriCat Foundation which is doing important work in protecting some of southern Africa's most important species. While you're here, go looking for leopards, African wild dogs and cheetahs. Sightings of pangolins and brown hyenas are also possible.

Part of AfriCat's excellent Okonjima Nature Reserve, Okonjima Plains Camp has beautiful rooms, all nicely spaced from each other and with big views out over the grasslands where plenty of wildlife can be seen. Local safari colors and decor brighten the large, appealing rooms, and the bar, restaurant, gift shop and swimming pool are all nicely done.

At Onguma Game Reserve it can feel like you're on your own private safari. It's right next to the eastern boundary of Etosha National Park and has many of the same animals, but the reserve is more exclusive and safari trails are much quieter.

Day 4 Rundu

One of northern Namibia's prettier towns, Rundu sits above the Okavango River. Watch for hippos and crocs as you break up your journey across the north.

Just about as far north as you can go in Namibia without spilling over into Angola, Hakusembe River Lodge, close to Rundu, is a terrific place to stay. You're right by the Cubango River, and facilities include large rooms with high, thatched roofs, a bar and dining area, and a swimming pool. You'll want to sit on the hotel's deck and enjoy the views forever.

The large elephant herds coming down to drink and swim along the Okavango River and surrounding flood plains will be a highlight of your visit to Mahango Game Reserve, part of Bwabwata National Park. Expect also crocs, hippos and other animals too.
